Published in 1983, Working Out by Charles Hix, with photographs by Ken Haak, was originally released as The Total Shape-Up Guide for Men. Hix, once a grooming columnist for GQ and Playboy, presented a fitness and lifestyle manual that promised advice on exercise, nutrition, and achieving the ideal physique.

What made the book memorable, however, wasn't the workout routines.

Haak's striking black-and-white photographs transformed an ordinary fitness guide into something far more evocative. Drawing on the visual language of classic physique magazines, his images celebrate the male body with a quiet sensuality that resonated with many gay readers at a time when queer representation was still limited in mainstream publishing.

Over the years, Working Out became a cult favorite, remembered not only with nostalgia but also for its lasting influence on artists and photographers. New York-based artist Aaron Krach even created an artist book inspired by Working Out, a testament to its enduring place in queer visual culture.

Today, it remains one of the most distinctive examples of 1980s male beauty culture—part fitness manual, part visual time capsule, and a book that continues to inspire new generations of artists and collectors.
