Published in 2004, Kim Jones brings together the work of American photographer Luke Smalley and British designer Kim Jones at an important moment in both of their careers.

Smalley began as a photographer of the male body, drawing on his background in sports medicine, personal training, and modeling. His first major project, Gymnasium, was a series of black-and-white photographs made over 15 years in his hometown in northwest Pennsylvania. His images took the familiar idea of the fit American male and gave it a more playful and sensual edge.

In 2002, Jones discovered Gymnasium in the lobby of the Mercer Hotel in Manhattan. Impressed by Smalley’s work, he hired him to photograph his first fashion line. This unexpected meeting opened a new chapter in Smalley’s career and led him into fashion photography.

What makes Kim Jones especially interesting is the way Smalley’s photographic world carries into fashion. Rather than treating clothing as the main subject, his photographs remain focused on the figures themselves. His approach to masculinity is playful, sensual, and sometimes slightly surreal, giving the images a character that feels distinctly his own.

Luke Smalley passed away in 2009 at the age of 53, leaving behind a relatively small but highly distinctive body of work. This first edition of Kim Jones, signed by Kim Jones, is an especially collectible publication for anyone interested in Smalley, early Kim Jones, fashion photography.
