Published in 2008, The Improper Bohemians is the fourth image book produced by RUEHL No. 925, a brand under Abercrombie & Fitch that has since closed.

The book takes its title from Allen Churchill’s The Improper Bohemians, a history of Greenwich Village in New York between 1912 and 1932. Known for its artists, writers, and unconventional way of life, the neighbourhood provides the setting for this publication.

Bruce Weber’s black-and-white photographs are accompanied by Greenwich Village and Me, a personal essay by Bob Colacello, former managing editor and art director of Interview magazine, founded by Andy Warhol. Together, the photographs and text look back at the neighbourhood and its place in New York’s cultural history.

Part of RUEHL No. 925’s series of promotional and lifestyle books, The Improper Bohemians brings Weber’s distinctive photographic style into a setting shaped by the history and spirit of Greenwich Village.
