In 2003, Larry Clark left New York for California. At a small skatepark in Venice Beach, he met a group of Salvadoran and Guatemalan teenagers from South Central Los Angeles. They wore tight jeans and band T-shirts and had found their own place through punk and skate culture.
One of them was Jonathan Velasquez, who was fourteen when Clark first met him.
Over the next four years, Clark photographed Jonathan and his friends, following the small changes and everyday moments of teenage life. The same world later became the basis for Clark's 2005 film Wassup Rockers, making the book and film two parts of the same project.
But Los Angeles 2003–2006 also tells another story.
Larry Clark has long been an important reference in fashion, and in 2015 his collaboration with J.W. Anderson launched at Colette in Paris. Performing that night was Revolt, the band led by Jonathan Velasquez—the teenager Clark had first photographed in a Venice Beach skatepark twelve years earlier.
Published in connection with exhibitions in New York and London, the book never had a proper second life in print. Its blue cloth binding, mounted photographs, and large square format make it a substantial object, while the photographs remain close to the people and world that Clark encountered by chance.
Despite the “Volume I” on its spine, a second volume never appeared.
